Seasonal Style Starter Kit: Spring 2018

The first day of Spring is March 20th; the weather is going to start to change, the colors are going to start to get brighter, and we fashion fools need/should change along with it.  Let’s start getting away from the drab black and greys, and start entering the fun pinks and greens. Depart from the wool and flannel and come into breathable linen and cotton.

As the seasons change, it becomes time to get our closets and minds ready for the transition. It can be a slow and drawn out process, especially with weather as finicky as it has been, but the Spring sales are starting to pop up, and we all should be taking advantage.

Spring fashion means no-show socks, t-shirts, light-weight jackets, and jeans other than black and dark blue. Oh, and color on color on color!! Starting this year, I am going to be bringing you some fun seasonal looks to get your creative stylish minds brewing. I will be calling it the “Seasonal Style Starter Kit”. Hopefully this will allow you to get some inspiration to come up with some awesome season-appropriate outfits as the year and weather goes through its paces.

This first edition of the #SSSK (Seasonal Style Starter Kit, for those of you that forgot) I am starting off with linen. That’s right, I said it! LINEN. An underrated fabric, that usually is associated with Miami, and beach weddings. But, if worn right, can be used outside of Dade County and sandy ceremonies.

Personally, I am more of a linen shirt/jacket guy than I am a linen pant guy. Everyone knows I like my pants to be painted to my legs, and usually linen doesn’t come in skinny distressed which is my norm. But, a linen shirt can be used as a work shirt, a go out shirt, or a BBQ grilling shirt.

My preference is not the standard white linen, however. But to go with color (which is really my M.O. with all clothes). Although a little harder to match with many outfits, adding that color adds character to the outfit, and lets the shirt and outfit as a whole stand out.

My GO-TO for all things linen is Cubavera (www.cubavera.com). Owned by Perry Ellis International, Inc. (owns Perry Ellis, Original Penguin, and many others), Cubavera has 100% linen shirts, suits, and yes pants, for basically any look you are going for. I own a short sleeve salmon-colored button up, and I have a long sleeve pink club shirt.

To show you the linen shirt really can be used as a versatile shirt, I styled it with some green denim from Mavi (www.mavi.com), and boat shoes (because how appropriate is linen and boat shoes?!?!) from Sperry (www.sperry.com). Of course you don’t need to go over-the-top with the green denim (b/c blue denim would look great too), but like I said adding color adds character!!

So, to start off the Spring Seasonal Style Starter Kit (#SSSSK – that’s some alliteration!), go with linen, denim, and a minimal shoe. Feel free to throw a light jacket in there as well if you’d like – it will only increase the dopeness of the outfit!! Let me know what you think of linen, and what you think of the #SSSK, and if you have any questions or recommendations for future editions.

Remember, have fun, and look good doing it!

Spring Style Fever

Spring Style Fever

Can’t believe it is already early March! The sun has come out, the temperature is on the rise (and so is the damn pollen), and it is time to get cray with Spring Style!!

With the coming spring means more color and less layers (although some layers are essential and multi-seasonal). It is still chilly enough for fun jackets, but warm enough for rips in your jeans. It is cold enough for grey tones, but balmy enough for hot pinks #realmenwearpinkbro. This post will go through some ideas of what to wear as 'Spring Style Fever' has kicked in.

The Pink Hoodie

You all may think I am crazy, but I am telling you pink is in…and not just for your baby girl! The hoodie craze is real, so we need to ride that wave as long as possible. If we could have the excuse to wear a hoodie every day, who would not do that!?

The Denim Jacket

The most multi-seasonal thing I own! You can wear the denim jack with a t-shirt on any warm day, or you can wear it with the pink hoodie on a chilly day; it is perfect. Also, I read this in GQ, and couldn’t agree more – make sure your denim jacket is tighter than you think it should be. You want to wear it as a layer as part of your outfit, not as a literal jacket that you take off when you get inside.

The Stone Wash Denim

My favorite wash of denim right now, and there is just so much to wear with it. Darks, lights, whites – stone wash is 1000! If you want to be really badass, then get them distressed. Either do it yourself (which I do not suggest, unless you’re a really Pintrest DIY type of person), or buy them with rips in them. Just know that someone in your life will say “do you know there are rips in your jeans?”  YES, MOM, I know there are rips in my damn jeans!!

The Boot

It’s not summer yet, so you don’t need to wear loafers, sneakers, and sandals exclusively yet. Fall, Winter, and Spring are great times to wear your boots. Unless they are snow boots, rock them with them with your hoodie and ripped jeans.

The Wooden Watch

Every man needs a good watch. If you’re spending time outside, going to a wedding, or wearing a casual outfit, the wooden watch is so versatile you can’t go wrong. I particularly like JORD watches (click the photo below), as they are super well made, and come in a trillion styles. Check them out and get yourself a good wooden watch.

A day with Timberland: Making my own #ModernTrail

A day with Timberland: Making my own #ModernTrail

When I hear Timberland Boot Co. I am used to thinking about the old school Timberland boots. If you didn't have Tims (short for Timberlands), you didn't fold the tongue down, the soles weren't two-tone, you were not cool, period! And, truthfully, I pretty much subscribed to this thought until fairly recently. I still have my Rust Nubuck 6" Premium Boots (or Cinnamon Tims as the kids say) that I have had since my freshman year of college (2004). I can remember using a paper-clip and tying the laces around the tongue to keep it folded down. I certainly was aware of the fact that Timberland made more products, like hiking boots and other outdoor gear, but I liked the old school boots, and I liked what I knew.

However, when you get offered to try out gear from an iconic brand, that has a household name like Timberland, you DO NOT turn it down. When I was asked if I could try out some of their new Spring line, part of the #ModernTrail campaign, of course, as I mentioned, I could not turn this down. Per my personal rule about my blog and my IG page, I don't post or write about things I don't know. Well, I know and like Timberland, so I was so excited to have the opportunity to try out some of the new line and post about them.

I was lucky enough to be able to choose from the newly released Spring Selection, and choose a combination that I thought I could wear throughout the early spring, and were both FUNCTIONAL and FASHIONABLE (story of my life!!). I ended up choosing the 6" Lineman Boots in Russet Full-Grain color, and the Mount Walsh Waterproof Blazer

Boots:

I have to say, if packaging meant anything about the product, these things were going to kill. Custom made box specifically for these boots and wrapped in their own lint bags, these boots were like unwrapping a Chanel bag, except, they were BOOTS!

They are visually complex, with leather wrapping around the toe, awesome waxed leather around the ankle, and heavy duty laces that looked like they are meant for hanging meat! Once I put them on, I could fully appreciate the quality of these shoes. I don't really know how to put it - they look like they are made for a man to wear digging ditches, or working on power-lines, but they are as comfortable as a 70 year old lady's walking shoe. I mean, seriously, they are stupid comfy. Not only are they comfortable to wear, all day, on my feet, but the ruggedness of them have this mysteriously fashionable and fun vibe.

I paired the boots with a medium-wash jean, but they could have certainly worked well with camo or grey or even black (yes, I know people don't like black and browns together, but IMHO, it works!). They are a great stylish compliment to any outfit. Although fairly rugged in style, wearing these with a t-shirt or light color button-down would go perfectly!

I am super happy with these boots. They really do symbolize the #ModernTrail, and they are super fun to wear. Don't be shy about wearing boots in the Spring time, and don't be shy about wearing them confidently with a fun spring outfit.

Blazer:

When I saw the word 'blazer' I was hooked. Then I saw the word 'waterproof' and it was like an oxymoron that was meant to be. A waterproof blazer? What in the new technology is going on over there at TimBroLand??

Not only does everyone need a raincoat, but a fashionable raincoat, that could double as a blazer...shut the front door!! I ordered a medium, and it fit me exactly how I wanted it to. It also fit well with either wearing a t-shirt, or wearing a button down. Not like your traditional navy blazer, with notched lapels and 2 buttons, this blazer was meant for the outdoors (oxymoron #2 in my mind). This jacket fit like a suit coat, but wore like a raincoat. With big pockets on the outside, a brass zipper that stops just before the waist, and a removable hood, this jacket has all the makings of Fashionable and Functional.

I wore the jacket two ways, just to see if I could really pull it off. One way with a shirt and tie, and another way, more casual with an open button-down and t-shirt. This jacket, in my opinion, worked well worn both ways (see for yourself below). Not only was it a great layer for a Spring day, but it really is waterproof. I put it through the test recently on a rainy Sunday, and it was perfect. Then I took it out the next day to work, and wore it with a more business-casual outfit, and again it worked wonderfully.

Seemingly designed to be an outdoor jacket, to be worn on the #ModernTrail, it works well with many different genres of outfit. The waterproof blazer is a real thing, and Timberland did a great job on this jacket.

Welcome

Welcome to the new site. Welcome to new experiences. Welcome, to the friendly home of TFM - where drab is turned to Chic!

As always, I aim to show others the world of men's fashion and aspects of life that I enjoy. I write about, and post about, things that I know and like. My goal when I started this blog, and what continues to be my passion, is to help influence others and their daily outfit and style ideas.

A lot of great guys in the world sometimes have trouble figuring out what to wear to work, or to school, a special occasion, or to the gym. I want to be that go-to spot where any guy, and I mean ANY GUY, can come and find inspiration on what to wear, how to create a look, and how to carry all the confidence in the world in their daily life!

As always, have fun, and look good doing it!!

More to come...stay tuned!
